Milestone Method

Quick definition: The Milestone Method is an earned value technique that breaks a discrete Work Package into several weighted milestones, each representing a portion of the Work Package's overall scope and budget.
As each milestone within the Work Package is completed, its assigned share of the budget is earned and reported at the Work Package level. This gives more granularity than waiting for the entire Work Package to finish, while staying simpler than tracking every individual task's percent complete.
Why it matters
Breaking a Work Package into weighted milestones gives earlier, more objective visibility into progress than an all-or-nothing completion measure, without requiring the level of detail that percent-complete tracking demands.

FAQ
How is value earned under the Milestone Method?
Each weighted milestone within the Work Package earns its assigned share of budget as it's completed, and that value is reported at the Work Package level.
Is the Milestone Method the same as the Weighted Milestone Method?
They describe the same underlying technique -- breaking a Work Package into weighted milestones -- so the two terms are closely related.
