Budgeted Cost of Work Remaining (BCWR)

EVM Terms Reviewed by forProject Technology - updated Oct 2026
Quick definition: Budgeted Cost of Work Remaining (BCWR) is the budget for the work not yet performed: Budget at Completion minus cumulative Budgeted Cost for Work Performed (BCWR = BAC − BCWP cum).

BCWR is the budgeted value of everything left to do. It's the numerator in every Independent Estimate at Completion formula (IEAC = ACWP cum + BCWR ÷ performance factor) and in both To Complete Performance Index formulas. In EVMS forProject it appears as "BCWP Remaining."

What this means for you

Forecasting starts with how much budgeted work is left. Dividing BCWR by a performance factor gives a formula-based Estimate to Complete, and comparing BCWR with the remaining funds shows the efficiency needed to finish within them.

Also known as
BCWP Remaining; Work Remaining; Budgeted Cost for Work Remaining
Used in
Independent Estimate at Completion; To Complete Performance Index (BAC); To Complete Performance Index (EAC)

FAQ

Is BCWR the same as Estimate to Complete?
No. BCWR is the remaining work valued at budget. ETC is the forecast of remaining actual cost of that work, which differs whenever performance isn't exactly on budget.
Is BCWR the same as BAC − BCWS?
No. That figure, the budget remaining by schedule, is sometimes called Remaining Budget. BCWR is based on work actually performed.
