Quick definition: Activity is another name for a Task, the basic building block of a project schedule.

What this means for you
The Durations and Relationships of Activities determine achievable dates and the project finish date. They let you plan the work at the right level of detail to model its logic and sequence. They're also the basis for baseline control, progress updating, and forecasting the remaining work.

Is there a real difference between a Task and an Activity?
No. The two terms mean the same thing. Microsoft Project uses Task, Primavera P6 uses Activity, and this glossary uses Task.
Do all Tasks have their own budget?
No. Not every schedule has resources assigned to its Tasks. Even when it does, some Tasks exist only for Duration and logic and don't need resources assigned.
