Quick definition: An EV Milestone is a subdivision of a Work Package, defined so that earned value can be measured at a finer level than the Work Package as a whole.

EV Milestones are how the Weighted Milestone Method works in practice. A Work Package is broken into a set of EV Milestones, each carrying a weight, and as work is performed against them they earn value that rolls up to the Work Package. An EV Milestone may appear as a milestone in the schedule, but many exist only in the earned value tool. Weights can come from budgets assigned to each milestone or from numeric values that show their relative size. How value is earned then depends on the method: under Discrete Milestone, each EV Milestone earns its full weight only when finished; under Measured Milestone, partial progress can earn value.

What this means for you

For long-duration Work Packages, it's important to have a way to measure progress along the way. Milestone methods provide a more objective way of measuring progress on a long-running Work Package, which improves the fidelity of Earned Value, or Budgeted Cost for Work Performed (BCWP), and therefore the validity of measures such as Schedule Variance (SV) and Cost Variance (CV).

FAQ

Is an EV Milestone the same as a schedule milestone?
No. An EV Milestone is a type of Milestone, defined by its purpose: measuring earned value within a Work Package. It may also appear in the schedule, but it doesn't have to. Many live only in the Earned Value Management System (EVMS) tool.
Do the EV Milestone weights have to add up to 100?
No. The weights are relative — what matters is each milestone's value in proportion to the others in the Work Package. They can come from resources and budgets assigned at the milestone level, or from a numeric value assigned where those aren't.
